UPDATE, May 14, 2009:
This plan has been put on hold for now. The Backout Boys now has a new mission. Thanks for all the support (you know who you are) and the lack thereof (you SHOULD know who you are).

As posted in the Philippine Mountainbiking Forum: (click here for actual thread)

Hello all.

We, the Backout Boys, are planning a fun run/fundraiser. As with the title this is being planned to save a life: a member’s sister who is battling ovarian cancer. Obviously, funds are needed.

One solution of the brother is to sell his bike. Another solution of the group is to sell extra or old parts and donate the proceeds to the family to add to the funds. But I don’t think this is enough. As it isn’t in our nature to ask and give nothing in return we came up with the idea of organizing a fun run fundraiser.

This way we HOPE to be able to raise more funds than by just doing the first 2 solutions thought of (selling the bike, selling extra/old parts), and at the same time give the MTB community real involvement with this fundraiser. How? Continue reading…

Please be advised there hasn’t been ANY concrete planning for this, but that is also the reason why we’re posting it here: to get suggestions on how to go about this, to get opinions on what and what not to do, and most importantly to minimize delays — as the cancer won’t be waiting anyone to get this done.

Getting back to how the MTB community can get involved this is what we’re thinking: we will organize a fun run and look for sponsors who will pledge certain amounts of cash for every kilometer a rider has ridden. Let’s say Company A pledges P100 (example only) for every kilometer I ride, and I succeed in riding 95 kilometers before I give up then Company A is now obligated to donate P9,500 for the funds.

As a rider I hope you will do your best to ride as far as you can — that would be your involvement with the fund raising, aside from giving your suggestions and opinions here.

All the details are still in shambles inside my head but I didn’t want to delay it any further, and since I got the go signal from the family to post this here, I decided to start the topic ASAP. We also haven’t talked about the route yet, but the Backout Boys know quite a few good trails here in the south and we would probably map out a nice tour around the trails.

Please share your thoughts, encouragements, opinions. Thank you and God bless.

    Bro,

I like this idea and seems can really materialize if we just get on with the planning and polishing of the steps right away. One suggestion is we can ask some groups who had organized such fun runs/race for a certain cause, maybe on how they went on about it. Another suggestion is maybe we can look for some NGO’s to get involved with this activity (though if we do this, we are talking of a larger scale activity).

I pledge to start looking for interested sponsors so as we are coming up with the final plan, we,as well have started to make a list of target sponsors for easier facilitation later on. I also pledge to be one of the riders of this fun run.

biking is fun, but it would surely be more than fun if we are able to help others while we are enjoying the sport….right!
