Epoy Molina AIR!

A friend, Kenneth, suddenly sent me a message on YM asking who Epoy was. After a short conversation he gave me a link to PEP.ph article about Epoy’s wife, with also a few details about what happened.

Last Sunday, March 29, 2009, Mr. Epoy Molina passed away due to loss of blood after crashing while doing a practice downhill run in Baguio.

The first time I heard the news was from Jun when I passed by his house yesterday to talk. He told me Migs knew the guy, rode with him a few times, I think, as Migs started riding downhill when the South Cycle guys organized a downhill clinic late 2008.

According to Jun the rider crashed, broke his leg, and due to the injury he obviously lost a huge amount of blood that caused his death. No other details were given to me.

When I got home and started surfing the internet, going to the usual sites I visit, I came upon a thread in the Philippine Mountainbiking Forum. The post I read didn’t give details about who the rider was and how everything happened. I proceeded to check other sections of the forum.

Here is a post by Mr. Yetiman in its entirety letting us know the details of what happened:

we decided to cancel the final run because of the death of a comrade. I was the one who announced it and let all the riders gather and waited over the phones and radios of what happened on the last portion of the finish line. Everything and everyone was so quiet…they said he has no pulse…we all prayed , and while praying , Bans Mendoza cried out there’s a heartbeat! All shouted in Jubilation! But still we waited , the race course was closed and all red-line adrenaline died down in exchange of solemn moments. A splinter group decided to go to Baguio Gen. Hospital.
Then we distributed pack lunch to everyone while still waiting. Then i got a call to require all riders to give blood in exchange of the blood they are transfusing to Epoy. We all did. While we are queue in the blood donor room, they broke the news that epoy is loosing it! I went to the emergency and saw Mike ( Lancetyron ) in his bedside….we lost a friend…

It was all accident…a freak accident…an ordinary crash on one of the finest DH course..but i don’t believe. GOD is in control. He wants our mate to be at His side. Epoy dearly love the Downhill Sport, he follows it everywhere. He is in search of the RIDE. He is even looking forward to ride with us in the far south and dead-set on completing the FOX DH series. We know he died doing what he love so much.
We know he wants us to carry-on and continue the passion we all share. It’s a big blow in our community but we know Epoy’s spirit would be with us to inspire and give more dedication. PARDS , YOU WILL BE ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS! WE KNOW YOU WILL BE WATCHING US ON THE RACE LINE, CHEERING YOUR HEART OUT TO BREAK LOOSE FOR THE WIN! Thanks for the memories and camaraderie…ENJOY WITH GOD!

Rest in peace, sir. I never had a chance to meet you but from what I’ve been hearing and reading about you I found out the Philippine cycling community just lost a good rider who loved the sport.

Condolences to the Molina family for their loss.
